Built to Last a Decade: Designer Philip Grandison on Making Clothes That Outlive the Trend Cycle

ATLANTA — In an industry that moves from one trend to the next, designer Philip Grandison is building for what remains. At GZTV's Fashion Masterclass, sponsored by Hollyland Tech and held during the Glam Experience Show at the Fulton County Arts Center in Downtown Atlanta, he gave the city's fashion and creative community an intimate look inside the mind of a working designer and the philosophy behind his made-to-measure brand.
Grandison walked the audience through what it means to be a designer, from the first sketch to the final fitting. His brand fuses Caribbean and British influence, a reflection of his roots. He is originally from Jamaica, where his mother worked as a seamstress.
His path into design began with necessity. Slim with long arms, Grandison could never find clothing that fit properly, so he altered his own. He made his first custom piece and kept going back for more, and the practice grew into a business. When people complimented his fits, he realized he wanted to create for those who can't simply pull a garment off the rack.
For aspiring designers, his advice is direct: just go for it. Resources are plentiful, he said, so start putting designs together on paper or on a computer and do whatever it takes to capture your imagination.
His biggest inspiration is blending what's happening in modern fashion with longevity. He wants pieces that can be worn five to ten years later and still feel relevant, so he tries not to chase high fashion. His favorite piece, a custom cashmere design built for winter, is meant to be worn for a decade, not a single season.
Those looking to bring Grandison's work into their own wardrobes can shop his pieces through the GZTV Showroom, the platform's official luxury retail destination where audiences purchase directly from premier designers and fashion houses featured across GZTV.
