From the Dressing Room to the Runway: Catwalk and the Value of a Model's Work

WORLD — A documentary from the mid-1990s is still making the case that modeling is skilled labor. GZTV brought that argument to Atlanta's fashion and creative community with an exclusive Film of the Month screening of Catwalk, streaming live on the Main Stage of the GZTV App and centered on the realities of the modeling industry.
Directed by Robert Leacock, the 1995 documentary follows Christy Turlington through Spring Fashion Week in Milan, Paris and New York. Turlington is widely regarded as one of the "original supermodels" of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Guests were given an intimate view of the behind the scenes elements that define a model's working life, from lighting and makeup preparation to the dressing room activity before a show begins. The film notes that cover shoots require careful attention to hair presentation, with hair positioned differently depending on the shot.
Catwalk also takes on how modeling is perceived. Some people don't value models and don't believe they should be paid. The film pushes back by showing the discernment it takes to evaluate a collection, and it makes clear why certain models earn what they do. As one observer puts it, "the dress doesn't come with those hips." Designers need models whose physique shows their pieces to best effect on the runway.
The screening is part of GZTV's Film of the Month series, which highlights cinema at the intersection of fashion, culture and creative expression. See why the work of a model, from the dressing room to the runway, is worth every dollar.
