Ulla Johnson Makes a Permanent Mark in New York City
NEW YORK — The Ulla Johnson Spring/Summer 2027 collection marks a major milestone for the brand as it presents a design evolution and physically made a lasting impression in New York City.
Ulla Johnson is known for her signature bohemian dresses and detailed prints, but this collection showcased structured tailoring, practical outerwear, and heavy denim while still carrying Johnson’s dreamlike feeling. But what about this campaign is so revolutionary?
The collection served as a tribute for the women of New York City through what Johnson called “Urban Pastoral” which explored the "performance of getting dressed". Challenged the notion of what can be considered evening wear and balanced it with street-inspired templates for styling sheer clothing in broad daylight.
Johnson rejected the traditional 15 minute runway shows of setting up temporary stages and throwing away props by making Gotham Park itself her own stage. In the 1980s, it was formally known as Brooklyn Banks, NYC's street skateboarding scene. Fell into years of disrepair until a community movement campaign successfully reclaimed it and eventually reopened in 2023.
Johnson collaborated with the landscape architecture operations and invested her set budget directly into the park's blueprint. Then a week after the venue ended, the Ulla Johnson corporate team returned as volunteers working alongside local community groups, and permanently planted the 750 native plants and 12 trees that had lined the runway.
Ulla Johnson turned a 15 minute runway show into a New York City beautiful park to last for many years and for many people to enjoy.
